Strategic Plan
Our school strategic plan is a visual plan based on our school pepehā to show the significance of our cultural narrative in everything we do. The plan is broken up into four key areas.
Maunga (mountains)
Our guiding principles
Awa (rivers)
Our strategic goals
Moana (sea)
Our school vision
Whenua (land)
Our school values
Maunga (mountains):
Our Guiding Principles
Our maunga (mountains) represent the three core principles that underpin everything we do.
Awa (rivers):
Our Strategic Goals
Our awa (rivers) represent our three strategic goals that we are prioritising as a school as part of our strategic plan.
Moana (sea): Our School Vision
Our school vision is based on a holistic view of educating the whole child and setting them up for success. The four components of our school vision are inspired by Te Whare Tapa Whā, and the four elements that contribute to an overall sense of well-being (physical, mental & emotional, family & social, and spiritual health). Our school vision is:
MAURI ORA: Strong in identity and belonging, active and inquiring minds, healthy bodies, and nurturing relationships.
Whenua (land):
Our School Values
Our school values are represented by the statement 'KIA TOA', which means to be victorious, brave, competent, skilful, capable, courageous, and a winner. We use this phrase to describe our aspirations for all of the tamariki at Victory Primary School. Our Kia Toa values are the fundamental beliefs that guide or motivate our attitudes and actions. We teach these values as part of our PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) approach to teach positive behaviour strategies, improve well-being, and increase educational achievement.
Other Symbols:
Manu (bird), rākau (tree), waka (canoe)
Our school vision also has three other symbols that link to things that are important in our school.
Manu (birds)
The three manu (birds) in the top left of our strategic plan represent our Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning) achievement and well-being challenges, which are set by the group of schools in Central Nelson that work collectively to improve outcomes for our tamariki. The tohu (symbol) for Te Kāhui Ako ki Whakatū is Te Manu Mātauranga (the bird of knowledge).
Rākau (tree)
The rākau (tree) in the middle of our strategic plan represents how we grow teaching and learning at our school. This includes the different components of our learning programme, represented by the roots, trunk, branches, leaves, and fruit on the tree.
Waka (canoe)
The waka (canoe) near the bottom of our strategic plan represents the metaphor of waka and wayfinding (the indigenous method of navigation used by the early voyagers to Aotearoa). We use this metaphor at VPS to describe our staff professional growth cycle and how we grow and develop as educators and leaders.
